The GRACQ and the Fietsersbond, Belgium's two main cycling associations, are organising a clap au vélo this Friday morning, during which cyclists across the country will be applauded for their choice of mobility.

This initiative takes place on the eve of World Bike Day, which takes place every year on 3 June.

Nearly 180 teams, including around 20 in Wallonia and Brussels, have announced their participation in this event designed to thank cyclists, but also to remind authorities of the importance of investing in cycling facilities.

Participants are invited to applaud cyclists at strategic locations, namely at the edge of cycle paths, in front of schools or offices or near crossroads.

The clap au vélo initiative was first started by the local chapter of Fietsersbond in Mechelen but became a national event in 2014. The United Nations established World Bike Day to draw attention to the benefits of bicycles, a means of transport which they have labelled "sustainable, affordable, clean and environmentally friendly."
