Liège is due a facelift and as such, a call from the city’s authorities has gone out to three design offices to pitch their ideas for the Territory Project, an urban rejuvenation initiative which is part of the Municipal Development Plan.

"Everyone is asking what will become of the city," RTBF quotes the mayor Willy Demeyer as saying. "At the same time, all the stakeholders are beginning to think about the development of the area, while investors and promoters want to know how to design the files."

For Demeyer, the main principle is to revisit all the neighbourhoods to see what their specificities are, and what developments we can bring but also to see what are the main guiding ideas.

Liège’s Municipal College has three potential projects in mind. “The first is the ‘River City’, a plan to consolidate the city around its river," Renaud Kinet, Director of the Urban and Regional Planning Department, told RTBF.

“Then there is the ‘Fertile City’ which will focus on the green territory. We have a lot of nature spaces, and we must enhance them, connect them, and make them accessible to all Liège residents. It is also a vector of sustainability for land management that is more robust in relation to climate change. The last project is the ‘City of Short Distances’, an idea of creating a soft mobility framework to connect the different neighbourhoods."

Additionally, a citizen initiative has already been launched. "It can't just be a matter for specialists,” Willy Demeyer told RTBF. “Everyone has to give their opinion. We have already had a few dozen people strongly involved in different fields who have given their opinion on the document at all stages."

An exhibition will then take place in September at Les Chiroux and a number of panels, including citizens drawn by lot, will give their opinions.

The final proposals for the Territory Project should be submitted to the Communal Council.
