Last night, a man fired 21 shots into the air outside a café in Charleroi, causing panic but no injuries.

The incident occurred around 02:45 am at the Harpers café-bar on Boulevard Tirou, confirmed by the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office on Saturday morning.

The unidentified suspect stepped out of a parked vehicle, discharged his firearm into the air, then fled the scene.

Several local police units set up a security perimeter around the site of the incident. The situation resulted in a state of panic, although no injuries were reported.

Investigators discovered 21 shell casings at the scene. “The shooter is believed to have used a Kalashnikov-type weapon,” said the Charleroi prosecutor’s office.

The federal police have taken over the investigation. The forensic team is due to visit the scene this morning.

The police hope to identify the suspect and the vehicle used with the help of the city’s extensive surveillance camera system, according to judicial authorities.
