Belgian, Dutch, and Luxembourg police have launched a large-scale operation targeting drugs tourism and arms smuggling at the E25 border post in Fourons.

The operation, which began Saturday afternoon, has already resulted in the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs and prohibited weapons.

Drivers have also been caught in the act of driving under the influence. The final results of the operation will be reported on Monday.

“This international operation aims to combat various criminal phenomena such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and arms smuggling across borders,” explained Frans Weekers, Secretary-General of the Benelux Union. “It’s a precursor to the new Benelux police treaty that will soon come into effect.”

“We are at the border with the Netherlands, so this is a good place to tackle cross-border drug issues. Fourons is centrally located in the Euregion and is a stone’s throw from Germany,” said Joris Gaens, the mayor of the municipality. The operation involves approximately one hundred agents.
