A man in his thirties who injured three people in the Schuman metro station in Brussels in late January was interned last month on the instruction of the council chamber, the public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday.

The events took place on 31 January at around 5.45pm, when the man pulled out a knife and randomly attacked passengers on a train entering the Schuman metro station. Three people were injured.

The three, a 25-year-old man with serious injuries and two people in their forties with more minor wounds, were taken to hospital while police and security guards subdued the assailant.

The individual was charged with attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon, and placed under arrest by the examining magistrate, who also appointed a psychiatric expert.

The expert determined that the man, who had been suffering from mental problems for some time, was not responsible for his actions.

In view of this, the judge’s chambers decided last month that he should be interned.
