Many Belgians consider excessive speed to be the main problem in their neighbourhood, according to the results of the 2021 Security Monitor report published by the federal police on Thursday.

The main problems Belgian residents face in their neighbourhood are related to traffic: among the ten main neighbourhood problems mentioned by the interviewees, five relate to vehicles.

The one mentioned most by far is excessive and unsuitable speed (67%), followed by aggressive driving (3rd with 46%), awkward parking (4th with 44%), noise pollution caused by road traffic (5th with 39%) and those related to heavy goods vehicles (6th with 38%).

Clandestine dumps and litter on public roads are the only non-traffic problem to occupy the top 5, in 2nd place (50%).

Among the other problems encountered at the neighbourhood level, burglaries in homes (33%) are in 7th place, followed by noise pollution caused by neighbours (24%) and theft of bicycles and scooters (24%).

Theft or demolition of (something on) the car closes out the top 10.

The Security Monitor concentrated on the results of a questionnaire sent to Belgians and relating to neighbourhood problems, the feeling of insecurity, victimisation, their propensity to file a complaint and their satisfaction with the functioning of the police. This is the tenth edition of the survey.
