Fifteen Delhaize supermarkets in Brussels are closed on Friday as the labour dispute between the supermarket and the unions continues.

Roel Dekelver, the spokesperson for the supermarket chain, announced on Friday that 15 shops were closed in Brussels as Delhaize management continues to refuse to adequately engage with trade unions.

A labour dispute has been going on at Delhaize since March after the supermarket chain announced its plan to franchise its 128 own shops to independent owners. Trade unions have since been fighting for their members' labour rights, as a franchising move may result in their wages and working conditions decreasing.

Since Delhaize's announcement, unions have set up strike actions and closed shops in protest. Delhaize fought these strikes in court. Now, such a ban only still exists in Hainaut. The supermarket chain sends bailiffs to shops every time there is a blockade at a shop to make a point.
