A member of the ecological party ‘Groen’, Meyrem Almaci, was forced to repeat swearing her oath after she improvised an additional line in Flemish parliament this Tuesday, reports Belgian media.
The agreed statement was “I swear to respect the Constitution”, yet Almaci, veering off-script, added, “I swear to respect the Constitution and to stand up for universal human rights”.
Immediately chastised by the temporary president of Flemish Parliament, Herman De Croo, Almaci was asked to stick to the agreed script and repeat the oath, this time correctly. To this, the green politician obliged.
Almaci was among 124 members of the Flemish Parliament to take the oath this Tuesday with a record 46.7% of members being women.
