Belgium’s parliament on Thursday passed a bill aimed at regularising the situation of British citizens who were registered as voters for local elections before Brexit came into force.

Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, British citizens lost one of the conditions for becoming a voter in local elections in Belgium, namely having the nationality of an EU Member State.

British citizens who were registered as European voters for the local elections before 31 January 2020 therefore had to submit a new application to take part in local elections as non-European citizens.

The bill passed on Thursday grants them an exemption from this process.

The draft law was broadly approved. Only Vlaams Belang voted against it.
