Police have arrested a man in Brussels who is suspected of a series of violent jewellery thefts after he allegedly snatched golden necklaces from the necks of at least six elderly women, the oldest of whom was 90.

The 32-year-old man is thought to have mugged six different women between the ages of 63 and 90 between February and June, according to Bruzz.

To carry out the thefts, he lurked in front of apartment buildings or grocery shops in the western municipalities of Jette and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe.

He then yanked the golden necklaces straight from his victim’s necks, the public prosecutor confirmed to the outlet.

Police were able to identify and detain the suspect thanks to the depositions given by the victims and by analysing surveillance camera footage.

Five of the six victims were born between 1929 and 1935 and many sustained serious injuries after the robberies, according to the outlet.

The 32-year-old arrestee was already known to police, as he had been sentenced to four years in prison by a Brussels court in 2013 for similar acts.
