Belgians angered by soaring food prices may be gratified to learn that, at least when it comes to beer, prices in Brussels remain fairly reasonable relative to other European capitals.

According to a recent study by Statista which was reported by La Dernière Heure (DH), beer prices in Brussels are the 10th highest out of 18 surveyed European capitals.

The study found that a 0.5 litre beer in a Brussels supermarket costs an average of €2.1, while residents of the Belgian capital can be expected to fork out €5 for the same quantity of booze in cafes and restaurants.

Iceland's capital Reykjavik was reported to have the most expensive beers, with Icelanders paying an average price of €2.5 for supermarket beer and €9.53 in a cafe or restaurant.

Conversely, the cheapest beers were recorded in the Czech capital of Prague, where beers cost less than €1 in supermarkets and €2.31 in cafes and restaurants.

In addition to beer prices, Belgium is fairly middle-of-the-road by European standards when it comes to citizens' net alcohol expenditure.

According to a report published earlier this year by Eurostat, the EU's official statistics office, Belgians spent an average of 1.7% of their household income on alcohol in 2021 – a touch below the EU average of 1.8% and only the 18th highest overall within the bloc.

Latvians spent the greatest proportion of their income on alcoholic beverages (5.0%). By contrast, Greece and Italy spent the least (1.0%).
