"An important page in the judicial history of our country has been written", declared the Federal Prosecutor, Frédéric Van Leeuw, on Wednesday morning in reaction to the Brussels terror trials guilty verdict.

On Tuesday evening, the long-awaited verdict of the Brussels terror attacks trials was finally announced. Eight of the ten defendants in the Brussels terror trial were found guilty of participating in terror group activities on 22 March 2016. Six of the eight were found guilty of murder and attempted murder in a terrorist context.

The only defendants acquitted on all charges by the 12-member jury in the Brussels Assize Court were the Farisi brothers, Smail and Ibrahim.

On Twitter, the Federal Prosecutor thanked "everyone who [took part in the trial]: the court, the jury, the lawyers (defence and civil parties) security services, the Ministry of Justice, the Communities for the Victims".

"There is still the debate about sentences, but I hope those who have suffered so much from what happened are able to find the support and care they need to rebuild their lives", added the magistrate.

He concluded with a thought for the jurors: "They have accomplished a colossal task. I hope that everyone is aware of the scale of their sacrifice and that they will have the support they need."

Sentencing will take place in September.
