From tonight (Monday evening), the Agency for Roads and Traffic is installing four new gantries for lane signs on the E40 motorway, meaning it will be completely closed in the direction of Ghent from 21:00.

A new rush-hour lane on the E40 motorway from Groot-Bijgaarden to Affligem will be cleared. To use the rush-hour lane, dynamic signs will be needed above each lane and the current breakdown lane. The signs will hang from gantries above the road. To install these, the motorway has to be closed for two nights.

Tonight and tomorrow evening, the E40 motorway in the direction of Ghent will therefore be closed between 21:00 and 05:30 between the junction with the Brussels Ring Road in Groot-Bijgaarden and the entrance and exit roads in Affligem.

Traffic towards Aalst can detour via the N9 motorway from Zellik to Asse, Affligem or Aalst, or via the N8 motorway from Dilbeek to Ninove. Traffic from Limburg or the east of Flemish Brabant is better off choosing a route via Antwerp.

In the Brussels direction, traffic will travel on one lane instead of the usual three lanes. Once the gantries are hoisted over the motorway during the night, police will also close the E40 motorway in the direction of Brussels four times for 15 minutes.
