Sales of heat pumps and thermodynamic water heaters in Belgium jumped 140% during the first half of 2023, the sector reported on Wednesday.

Infopompeachaleur.be noted that no less than one in four heat-generating systems now installed in Belgium is a heat pump – a sign of a changing mentality in the construction sector.

In the first six months of the year, heat pump sales rose to 30,000 units. Sales of thermodynamic water heaters also hit record highs, numbering 22,000 units – a growth of 142%. Of the heat pumps sold, 14% were water-to-water and 86% air-to-water. The sector observed a "notable shift from traditional boilers to sustainable heat pump technology".

This boom in sales reflects the growing awareness of "the importance of sustainable and forward-looking technologies among builders and renovators, proving that the energy transition in the construction sector has really taken off", analysts state.

They attribute the success of heat pumps to the "ambitious investments made by distribution network operators to enable the Belgian population to opt for energy-efficient heating solutions and to the government." In particular, they highlighted the government bonus policy which "fully encourages the choice of a heat pump".

However heat pump manufacturers and distributors stress that a "more attractive electricity price compared with gas and fuel oil" could further encourage the spread of heat pumps.
