Clashes between protesters and law enforcement have taken place in Liège over weekend, causing significant property damage.

A school in particular experienced significant damage and several windows were smashed in the surrounding buildings.

The clashes erupted initially on Friday night, following the death of a young man shot by the police in the afternoon, in the commune of Oupeye. The protests later spread to nearby Herstal.

“We experienced rioters here in Herstal, who attacked the police, public property and even private property,” Mayor Jean-Louis Lefèbvre stated. “Fortunately, our police force, well supported by neighbouring areas, managed to contain the damage and we have not registered any injuries on either side,” he added.

Extensive property damage

The assessment carried out on Sunday morning lists damaged bus shelters, overturned and burnt glass recycling containers, and damaged street furniture. A local primary school was also heavily impacted.

Furthermore, firefighters from Liège had to be called out twice to extinguish various fires.

In both Herstal and Oupeye, a meeting is scheduled between all relevant authorities to assess the situation and implement necessary precautions for the coming days.
