The lifeless body of a 16-year-old boy from Brussels washed ashore in the coastal city of Bredene on Sunday morning. He encountered difficulties following a late-night swim on Saturday.
A passer-by heard a swimmer call out for help on Saturday evening and immediately jumped into the water to assist.
However, the swimmer had already disappeared. A search operation was launched involving rescue boats and an NH90 helicopter, but proved unsuccessful.
Sunday morning saw the tragic discovery of the 16-year-old’s lifeless body, approximately two kilometres from his last known location.
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances of the incident. It is speculated that the boy may have run into trouble due to strong currents.
