A 37-year-old woman from the municipality of Grez-Doiceau in Walloon Brabant was killed in Hoegaarden in Flanders on Sunday afternoon after falling off a bridge with her horse, RTL Info reports.

According to the Flemish East Brabant rescue zone, the woman was on an excursion with her 9-year-old son along a country lane near the village of Meldert. The pair were riding towards a nearby riding school.

At around 15:30 an accident occurred. The woman’s horse fell off a bridge over a small river, with the horse falling on top of the mother.

“She fell off a bridge with the horse… The horse landed with all its weight on top of her,” police told Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

The exact cause of the fall is not yet clear. Local police say that the horse may have reared. The woman’s son was just metres away from his mother as the accident occurred. The boy is now in the protection of the police.
