The Office of the Public Prosecutor on Tuesday requested a six-year prison sentence for a man identified as Mr. B. at the Charleroi Correctional Court.
The defendant, who is in custody, is facing trial on three counts of assault and battery perpetrated between November 2020 and March 2021. He denied attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend, but admitted to subjecting her to assault and battery.
He is accused of pushing his ex-girlfriend on 3 December last in Marchienne-au-Pont (Charleroi) while she sat on a window sill over three metres above the ground.
"The defendant did not accept the separation and there was a discussion during which she reiterated her desire to separate from the defendant. She managed to hold on to the window frame for a few seconds before letting go and falling. Fortunately, there was a van trailer parked below," Me. Liévin, the civil party, said.
The defendant claimed that it was the victim who jumped.
"The victim escaped the worst and was very lucky to land in a trailer. The presence of the defendant's DNA on the victim's chest confirms the facts," the prosecution explained.
The defence pleaded for acquittal on the charge of attempted murder and a work sentence for the assault charge.
Judgement is expected on 7 September.
