Man wanted for attempted child abduction in Ghent

Police and the East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office are searching for a man suspected of attempting to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in February.

The events took place on Thursday 23 February at around 00:30, in the ‘Spaanskasteelplein’ area behind St Macharius church in Ghent.

A 10-year-old girl was approached by an unknown man who asked her to follow him. The man spoke to her in Dutch with an English accent. The girl was able to push the man away and flee.

The suspect is a man of around 50 years of age and between 1.65 m and 1.75 m tall, the police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office report. He has dark brown eyes and short, black, greying hair. He is thin and has wrinkles on his cheeks. He has unkempt yellow teeth and is a smoker.

On the day of the incident, the suspect was wearing a black cap with a green pattern and white lettering, a black leather jacket, black trousers and black trainers.
