The Francophone Greens (Ecolo) are calling for an end to the tax-free allowance for Belgian MPs of €2,500 a month, its co-president Jean-Marc Nollet told Sudinfo on Friday.

"It’s not normal for an MP to be paid like that," he stresses.

The Greens are calling for the abolition of the tax-free allowance to be voted on swiftly so that it comes into force for future new MPs, after the 2024 elections.

The measure would lead to a 30% reduction in their remuneration. "If some people play for time – which I fear they will – it will be postponed until 2029," explains Jean-Marc Nollet.

"Greens and citizens cannot accept this. I am therefore asking the other presidents to take a stand today."
