Train with 500 passengers on board evacuated at Merksem due to technical problem

About 500 passengers had to be evacuated from a train travelling between Brussels to Amsterdam on Tuesday evening, the SNCB said.

The train, which developed a technical problem, was stuck at Merksem, Antwerp Province, from about 7 p.m. on Tuesday.  “The technical problem initially seemed to have been solved, but then another problem arose,” a spokesman for the railway company explained.

SNCB therefore decided to evacuate the train. Passengers were placed on another nearby train, supervised by emergency services.

The evacuation was completed at about 11.45 p.m. and the passengers were able to continue their journey.
