The lifeless body of a man was found in the water near the Krakele Bridge in the city of Bruges. How he ended up in the water is still being investigated, but it is assumed he was fishing along the Bruges-Ostend canal.

Passers-by had found fishing equipment near the Krakele bridge along the Bruges-Ostend canal around 08:30 on Sunday morning. They notified the police, who arrived at the scene.

"There appeared to be no one near the equipment," Lien Depoorter of the Bruges police zone told VRT, adding that a fire brigade diving team then entered the water to search for a possible drowning person.

Not much later, the divers found a body: the victim was a 37-year-old man. It is not yet clear how he ended up in the water. "Further investigation will have to clarify the cause. For now, all avenues are still open," Depoorter said.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has appointed a medical examiner to clarify the cause of death.
