The Centre de Prévention du Suicide is launching a new campaign on Tuesday to raise awareness ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September.

With the slogan 'Before tragedy strikes' ('Avant le drame'), the campaign focuses on taking action to prevent suicide "before or after a suicidal episode."

Suicide is the leading cause of death among teenagers. Indeed, in the 15-24 age category, over a quarter of deaths is due to suicide, notes the Sciensano Institute of Public Health.

"It is vital to remind people that suicide can be prevented and that resources exist. This message particularly needs to be conveyed to young people, with the importance of dialogue and the possibility of getting help in time," the initiators of the campaign highlight.

In practical terms, the campaign consists of several tools to raise awareness and prevent suicide. Specifically, a personal emergency plan in the event of a suicidal crisis can be drawn up with the help of a professional. There will also be a general guide containing frequently asked questions on how to help someone in a suicidal crisis.

Posters will also be put up in Brussels metros and trams to raise awareness of the support services offered by the Centre de Prévention du Suicide.
