One in six workers now receives an allowance from their employer for cycling to the office, an analysis carried out by HR services company Acerta revealed on Monday.
Acerta's analysis was based on data from 320,000 workers and released to mark Mobility Week from 16 until 22 September.
Since May 2023, all sectors have been able to grant this allowance. This extension has had both an immediate and positive effect: 16.65% of workers currently receive a bicycle allowance, compared with 14.46% for the period January-April 2023.
The figures for cycling allowances have been rising for years. In recent months, the average number of kilometres travelled has reached 11.25 km/day, giving people a monthly allowance of around €46.50.
Acerta added that the number of workers who rent bikes through their employer has reached a record high this year: 1.62% of workers now opt to hire a bike to get to the office. This is a 25% increase on last year.
