A 24-year-old woman was killed by a drunk driver in the early hours of Sunday morning after a fatal collision while riding an electric scooter in Ixelles.
At around 02:00, the woman was hit by a car on Avenue de l’Hippodrome, barely a few hundred meters from Place Flagey, where she had spent the night with friends.
A witness to the accident is said to have provided first aid. The emergency services quickly intervened.
The driver, who fled the scene, was later arrested by Brussels-Ixelles police officers.
After being hospitalised at Saint-Pierre in Brussels, the woman did not survive her injuries. She died on Saturday afternoon.
The driver, a 35-year-old man under the influence of alcohol, was arrested, the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s office said on Sunday.
He has been charged with homicide by an examining magistrate. An expert and a coroner were present at the scene.
