A man was shot on the Geerwijnstraat in the centre of Bruges (West Flanders) after attacking officers with a knife. He was taken to hospital with severe injuries, but has since died.
The Bruges police confirm that a man was shot during an intervention in the city centre, in the Geerwijnstraat. He was between 30 and 45 years old and known to the police, Bruges mayor Dirk De fauw told VRT.
"The man's mother reportedly called the police because he was upset. When the officers arrived, the man was walking on the street and allegedly attacked them with knives," he said. "They then shot him. The man was taken to hospital with severe injuries but has since passed away."
The Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, Belga News Agency confirmed.
