The Delhaize supermarket in the Flagey branch in Ixelles was forced to close its doors on Saturday afternoon due to a protest action.

Some 150 people had gathered at the shop on Rue de Hennin in protest against the chain’s plans to franchise all its branches.

Some protested in front of the shop, while others obstructed customers by filling trolleys with products, taking them to the checkout and then leaving them saying they could not pay for their purchases.

This caused long queues at the tills and disruption for working staff. The protest action led to the announcement around 12:00 that the supermarket would close its doors for the rest of the day.

The protest action comes days after Delhaize announced plans to offer large bonuses to workers who agree to join franchised stores in a bid to put an end to months of ongoing labour disputes across the country.
