A 41-year-old woman died in suspicious circumstances in Leuven on Monday night, the Leuven Public Prosecutor's Office (Flemish Brabant) said on Tuesday.

The victim is believed to have fallen from her flat on the fifth floor, but the circumstances are still unclear.

"At around 00:40 on Tuesday morning, a witness reported to the Leuven police that a woman had been found with serious injuries," said Sarah Callewaert, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office. "It is possible that she had fallen from her flat on the fifth floor."

Witnesses nevertheless tried to resuscitate the 41-year-old woman, but she died at the scene.

"Shortly after the incident, a 45-year-old man arrived in a panic and said he was her partner," the Public Prosecutor's Office added. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the women's death, the forensic laboratory and the medical examiner went to the scene to make the necessary findings.

"The victim's partner has been arrested and will be questioned later today (Tuesday) about the exact sequence of events."
