Prison staff across Belgium returned to work at 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening as planned, according to the Prison Service.
The penitentiary workers had walked out at the same time on Sunday evening to denounce the “inhumane” conditions of detention and work that prevail in prisons, due mainly to staff shortages and overcrowding.
A minimum service had been promised, but it could not be provided in 20 of the 36 establishments, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne said on Tuesday morning.
The scale of the movement had even led, on the second day of the strike, to the cancellation of visits, activities, work for prisoners and outings to the yard.
In some prisons, only meals and medical care were provided.
