A large boa constrictor snake which escaped from a home in the Walloon city of Braine-le-Comte was safely recaptured on Monday.

Residents were previously warned to stay away from the animal if it was spotted.

The snake, which escaped sometime in the morning, was first spotted by walkers as it slithered through the grass in a local forest. Later, it was spotted again, and passersby contacted local emergency services. Representatives of the Walloon Nature and Forest Department (DNF) were later called out to capture the snake.

Local authorities had previously issued a warning to local residents, urging them to steer clear of the animal if spotted and to immediately dial 112. "The snake is harmless as long as it does not feel threatened," the local municipality had warned in a press release.

After its capture, Braine-le-Comte authorities announced that the boa constrictor was in good health. The snake will now spend the rest of its days at the Pairi Daiza zoo.
