As the construction of the new tram system continues in Liège, one tram made its first public appearance on Tuesday morning during a technical trial.

At 11:00 on Tuesday, a Liège tram made its first run from the Bressoux maintenance centre. It was a historic moment given that the project, which was launched in June 2019, has experienced a number of setbacks and delays. The Liège tram is now scheduled to enter commercial service in May 2024.

The new tram route runs from the neighbourhoods of Bressoux to Coronmeuse. The tests aim to check that the line is operating correctly, stated TEC's communications manager for the project, Daniel Wathelet.

The tram set off at very low speed towards Coronmeuse to test the tram's gauge on the tracks and the overhead contact lines under voltage. During this test phase, the tram accelerated to 50 km/h to test the braking.

An approved body still has to validate this first stage of the project before tests can continue on each of the 20 trams.
