A new four-day artists’ trail proposed by the Brussels commune of Ixelles and implemented by the non-profit We Art XL association, offers the public a chance to attend a range of cultural events in the University District.

Artists’ workshops, concerts, exhibitions, lectures, performances, dance and street-art trails are just some of the events to be enjoyed from 12 to 15 October.

The hub of the activities will be the Volta building, an impressive 5,000-square-metre former power station built in 1914 and located on Rue Volta in Brussels. For the occasion, it will host a group exhibition featuring some 150 contemporary amateur, semi-professional and professional artists from the Belgian capital.

The aims of this event are both cultural and social. On the one hand, the idea is to support associations, venues and artists by giving them greater visibility through exhibitions and studio visits.

On the other hand, the aim is also to enhance the town’s architectural heritage through a variety of activities, while promoting access to culture in general.

For this first edition, several partners have been invited, including Brussels universities ULB and VUB, Ixelles Museum, Instituto Italiano di Cultura, Brussels Philharmonic and many others.

A variety of themed tours (street-art, multimedia, artists’ studios) will be on offer, so there will be something for everyone, the organisers note.

The Artists’ Trail is “a unique opportunity for the curious to discover art in all its forms, the artistic density present around Ixelles Cemetery and the quality of the cultural associative fabric in often little-known locations, and to make contact with the artists,” the organisers said in a press release.

The multi-disciplinary event is entirely free of charge.
