Federal Police were shocked to discover 11 venomous snakes on a Flixbus coming from Amsterdam last weekend. Police stopped the coach to search for drugs.

Police and customs agents searched the coach in a rest area off the E16 motorway, only to discover 11 snakes in the belongings of a Spanish couple. The animals were in small plastic boxes placed in a bag.

The snakes in question are Gaboon vipers. Their venom is dangerous and can cause haemorrhages, respiratory and heart problems, as well as paralysis and necrosis. In order to remove the snakes safely, firefighters were called. The animals were later brought to specialised animal shelters.

The Spanish couple now find themselves in hot water. The police have officially launched an investigation into the incident. Police say that the transport of the animals represented a significant risk to the other passengers on board.
