Government officials have put Belgium on yellow alert and activated a non-emergency hotline as the country prepares to be hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday.

The Royal Meteorological Service (IRM) said that a "string of rain showers" would go through Belgium on Friday, with the showers possibly giving way to storms, particularly on the coast.

The IRM said that the weather on Friday morning would be very cloudy with a risk of thunderstorms, with the yellow alert activated as wind gusts could reach 70 kilometres per hour.

While the showers will take place primarily in the first hours of the day, the IRM said that intermittent showers could still take place in the evening.

The 1722 hotline was also activated in order to divert non-urgent calls for assistance from the fire brigade, in an effort to keep the emergency fire and police numbers free for those needing medical or urgent assistance.
