A laboratory used for manufacturing drugs was discovered on Saturday evening in a warehouse in Aartselaar, in the province of Antwerp, the Antwerp public prosecutor's office announced.
The laboratory was not discovered by the police, but rather a private security company. Security guards were dispatched to the scene after an alarm went off.
Local police established a perimeter around the warehouse. Investigators believe that amphetamines were manufactured at the site.
Once the investigation by the narcotics unit of the Federal Police is completed, the entire installation will be dismantled in a secure manner.
According to statistics from the Federal Police, around two drug laboratories are discovered each month in Belgium. Since 2017, a total of 120 clandestine drug production facilities have been dismantled by the police. Two-thirds of these labs were discovered in the last three years.
