The Brussels Waste Agency is studying the feasibility of the widespread use of underground waste containers in the Belgian capital.
Brussels Minister Alain Maron (Ecolo) reported having commissioned a study to look into its potential benefits on Monday.
The study commenced in September and the first results are expected in spring next year.
"The study aims to evaluate the usefulness of underground containers in relation to several challenges: the highest degree of collection and sorting of recyclable waste streams, improvement of urban cleanliness, efficiency, cost and environmental impact. It should also take into account the nuisance on public spaces and subsoil," Minister Maron said.
The waste agency will also involve a range of partners such as the Brussels municipalities, Fost Plus, Bruxelles Environnement and Perspective for the study.
The agency already has an agreement in principle to install underground waste containers in some 25 locations across the Region.
