Students from the University of Liège won the 12th edition of the WSL technology institute's 'Startech' competition on Thursday evening, with their innovative project for period pants fitted with an extra-flat heating belt.

The winning 'Peach' team has now been invited to take part in the next mission of the Walloon Export and Foreign Investment Agency (AWEX) in Texas, WSL announced on Friday.

After an initial internal round at each participating school, in which 500 students took part, five projects were shortlisted for the final. The final five teams had to present their projects to a professional jury of entrepreneurs on Thursday.

The 'Peach' team from ULiège won the day with a technological product that will make life easier for women and girls suffering from painful periods.

Second place went to the 'Kiwi' team from UCLouvain, who developed a healthy, zero-waste soft drink dispenser. The Louvain-la-Neuve runners up will pocket a €1,000 voucher from Wallonie Entreprendre to complete their project.
