The new bus station at Wavre (Walloon Brabant) was inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of the Federal Minister for Mobility Georges Gilkinet and his regional counterpart Philippe Henry.

The new station represents an investment of €2.075 million for the Walloon Region and places particular emphasis on passenger information and intermodality, with a platform shared by the TEC and the SNCB, as well as secure bicycle boxes. It is also the first TEC station in Wallonia to be equipped with screens showing bus departure times in real time.

Around 20 other bus stations in Wallonia are expected to follow this example in the near future, but for the time being the Wavre station remains the first to be equipped with summary displays showing bus timetables in real time in the station, and digital displays on the platforms showing the departure times of the next buses on the platform concerned.

The old bus station at Wavre was dilapidated and too narrow. With the new infrastructure, the number of platforms has been increased from eight to 13. These platforms are longer, and the whole layout is adapted to the new buses.

For greater safety, access is limited to TEC vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists using the TEC or SNCB services. These users benefit from safe paths. In addition to the traditional bicycle racks, closed bicycle boxes are available for hire.

The project was launched in 2019 and was carried out in collaboration with the town of Wavre and the SNCB, as one platform is shared by the TEC station and the train station. Two of the platforms will also be used by De Lijn buses.

"This new station is a symbol of intermodality," enthused Federal Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet at the inauguration on Tuesday.
