A 74-year-old woman has tragically passed away in a fire that took place in Aalst, Belgium during the early hours of Sunday. This has been confirmed by Aalst’s mayor, Christoph D’Haese.

The fire raged between 2:00-3:00am in the central Zonnestraat district of Aalst. It was noticed by a 28-year-old woman who immediately alerted the emergency services.

Despite quick reactions, help arrived too late for the 74-year-old woman living on the second floor, who didn’t survive the fire. “The woman on the third floor, along with her pets, was rescued,” states D’Haese. There were no residents in the building’s ground floor.

D’Haese extends gratitude to the 28-year-old woman who reported the fire. He added, “Thanks to her swift action, the fire service was not far behind. They could prevent much worse.”
