Rail workers from Liège are striking for 48 hours from Tuesday, 7 November, in protest at restructuring and cost-cutting plans by SNCB, the National Railway Company of Belgium.

The strike, which has united various factions, will begin at 22:00 on 7 November and continue until 22:00 on 9 November. A gathering is planned between 11:30 and 13:00 on Wednesday on the Guillemins station esplanade.

The Liège railway employees are demanding their voices be heard as they protest a series of restructurings and cutbacks which will worsen their labour conditions.

According to Marc Eyen, Permanent Secretary of CSC-Transcom Liège-Verviers, the workers feel they are being "squeezed like lemons."

He added: "Overtime becomes structural on the sites, and the staff do not even get the chance to take their recovery days. This is untenable."

Eyen added that the management remains deaf to union calls and unmoved by "colleagues falling ill, absences leading to train cancellations, and a degradation of passenger service."
