A man in police custody was found hanged in a cell within the Palace of Justice, Brussels, on Wednesday afternoon, the local prosecutor’s office has stated.

The individual was taken immediately to hospital, where his condition is described as “very critical”. An investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident.

The man had previously appeared before the city’s court of first instance (located in the Palais de Justice), which had reaffirmed his remand status, the Brussels prosecutor clarified. The man was awaiting his prison transfer in a cell in the Palais de Justice.

Preliminary findings suggest he was “very agitated” upon returning to his cell. “As a precaution, the overseeing police officers removed his shoelaces”, the prosecutor’s office shared. “When they came to check his cell 15 minutes later, it was discovered the man had attempted suicide using his t-shirt.”
