A fire broke out in a five-flat building in Schaerbeek on Sunday morning, resulting in one person being hospitalised due to smoke inhalation.

The fire started around 07:00 in the basement of a master house split into apartments on Avenue Louis Bertrand.

Brussels firefighters used their ladder to rescue one person on the third floor and guided two others out via the communal stairs.

Extensive amounts of furniture and other possessions complicated the extinguishing process. The flat’s occupant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Three of the five flats are now deemed uninhabitable. One was severely damaged by the fire, another from the water damage incurred while extinguishing the fire and a third after Sibelga found the gas installation to be non-compliant.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
