In a globalised world where opportunities abound, more than 500,000 Belgians have chosen to call another country home, according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Experts, however, believe this figure is likely an underestimate, as it only accounts for those officially registered with consulates.

The allure of expatriation has become increasingly attractive to Belgians, with factors such as professional opportunities, international marriages, and a desire for adventure cited as common motivations. Notably, the impact of economic crises and a craving for a better quality of life in the face of declining purchasing power have also contributed to this trend.

France leads the list of the top 10 destinations for Belgian expats, with 149,161 people making it their new home. Following closely are the Netherlands (42,706) and the United Kingdom (35,981). Spain, particularly favoured by Belgian retirees, holds the fourth spot with 35,808 expats. The United States, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada, and Israel complete the list.

Beyond Europe, Asia emerges as a significant destination for Belgians, hosting 7.9% of the expat population. Australia, Argentina, Brazil, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are also among the more distant countries attracting Belgian residents.

Beyond pensioners

However, the reported numbers are considered an underestimate, as they only encompass Belgians officially registered with consulates. While registration is voluntary, the Foreign Affairs Ministry encourages it for more effective consular assistance in emergencies and access to administrative services.

The appeal of sunny destinations, particularly in Spain and Portugal, has skyrocketed in recent years. Notably, more than 35,000 Belgians now own property in Spain, and this figure continues to rise. The profile of expats is also changing to include not only pensioners seeking a peaceful retirement, but also young professionals attracted by the favourable climate, the significant difference in the cost of living and the vibrant expat community.

As the number of Belgians living abroad continues to rise, fuelled by a complex interplay of economic, lifestyle, and personal factors, the global diaspora serves as a testament to the nation's evolving relationship with expatriation.
