On Wednesday morning, the Brussels Correctional Court handed down a 12-year prison sentence and five years probation to a man convicted of rape.

Yannick F. attacked a student on the Plaine campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Ixelles in December 2022.

The court followed the prosecutor's indictment across the board, sentencing the man to 12 years' imprisonment and five years' probation. The measure had been requested on the basis of the report of the psychiatric experts, who had concluded that Yannick F. constituted a social danger and presented a high risk of re-offending.

The 25-year-old man, who has no fixed address in Belgium, was found guilty of raping a young woman aged 21 on the evening of 28 December 2022, who was studying for his first bachelor's degree in bio-engineering at ULB. The victim was threatened, violently attacked and raped as she left a building on the Plaine campus in Ixelles. Her assailant also extorted money from her.

The investigation revealed that the accused had been "hanging around" the campus for several years. In 2021, two female students filed a complaint against him for indecent exposure.

At the end of September 2022, he was sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment for assault and battery resulting in death without intent, following a fight with another homeless man on the site of the Delta hospital in Auderghem.

He was conditionally released shortly after sentencing, having served half of his sentence in pre-trial detention, and by October he had returned to prowl the campus.
