Facebook parent company Meta's Threads will arrive in the European Union from December, the Wall Street Journal announced on Thursday.

Launched in July to rival X (formerly Twitter), Threads was not previously available to the European public, primarily due to European data protection regulations. The main concern was the data transfer between Instagram and Threads.

Threads was created by Instagram, Meta's photo and video sharing app, and acts as an alternative to microblogging site Twitter, offering a "new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations", according to the company's website.

Some ten million users registered on Threads within hours of its launch, and the app now boasts 100 million users, according to Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

The platform was immediately labelled as X's biggest rival. X has regularly come under fire from users and advertisers alike since billionaire Elon Musk took over the social medium last year, with the company's workforce shrinking by roughly 75% since the takeover.
