Emma, a wolf from the Hechtel-Eksel pack, has been recognised as a settled resident of the area around Kalmthout, Brecht and Wuustwezel, in northern Belgium, after being spotted regularly in the area for six months.

This was announced on Thursday by the Agency for Nature and Forests (ANB).

Born in 2022, Emma is the tenth cub resulting from the pairing of wolves Noëlla and August that year.

In conjunction with the relevant municipalities, the ANB has been focusing on providing comprehensive information to residents.

Emma’s territory now falls within the designated risk area, which entails the availability of subsidies for wolf-deterrent measures, such as fencing to protect other animals.

The agency also reimburses damage caused by wolves, once the damage can be proven to have been inflicted by a wolf.
