Dutch 4DSOUND technology to debut at Leuven's Ocean of Sound festival

In a groundbreaking leap beyond conventional stereo sound, the realm of music is set to transcend boundaries with the introduction of 4DSOUND technology.

Developed over a decade ago in Amsterdam, this cutting-edge innovation promises to immerse audiences in a four-dimensional auditory experience, transforming spaces into dynamic oceans of sound.

The inaugural showcase of this revolutionary technology is to take place at the Ocean of Sound festival in Leuven from 7 to 17 December. Over the course of two weekends, festival goers will have the opportunity to partake in intimate listening sessions, club evenings, and artist performances that unveil the transformative power of sound in four dimensions.

4DSOUND technology redefines the listening experience. The 48 strategically positioned speakers within a room create a sonic canvas, immersing listeners in a sea of evolving sound waves that come to life in the surrounding space and making it impossible to pinpoint distinct sound sources.

This innovative approach opens up a myriad of possibilities for composers and sound artists. "For the past decade or so, we have been developing what we call spatial sound instruments: site-specific sound systems that can project sound holograms into a listening area, allowing artists to play space like an instrument," co-founder of 4DSOUND Poul Holleman told RTBF.

In a world-first demonstration of this revolutionary technology, the De Waele brothers, better known as Soulwax/2manydjs and pioneers of alternative electronic music, will headline the Ocean of Sound festival. The duo has crafted a 4DSOUND version of their 2020 album (EMS Synthi 100) for the occasion.

Known for their fascination with vintage machines and avant-garde equipment, the De Waele brothers utilised an analogue synthesizer produced in limited quantities in the 1970s, to create the album. The original synthesizer will be transported from Ghent to Leuven for the Ocean of Sound festival.

The world premiere sessions of the 4DSOUND version of EMS Synthi 100 by the De Waele brothers will take place on 14 December at STUK Studio, with performances at 20:00, 21:30, and 23:00.
