The electronic identity card Kids-ID will also be issued to non-Belgian children from 15 January in an effort to tackle identity fraud, announced Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor.

Until now, non-Belgian children living in the country were given a paper identity card, which was easy to forge.

"With the electronic Kids-ID for non-Belgian children, we are combating identity fraud," said de Moor. "In addition, the digital card allows us to quickly determine who has parental authority, providing better child protection."

The electronic Kids-ID, which has been issued to Belgian children for several years, allows access to relevant information, such as local authority registration, police residential checks and school enrolment. It also enables immediate verification of who holds parental authority.
