In the heart of Antwerp, Ell Circo D'ell Fuego (ECDF) has developed circus camps and a series of lessons tailored for children who have experienced intra-family violence.

The organisation is making a significant impact by employing the motto, "In the circus, no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

The philosophy behind the initiative emphasises learning to navigate boundaries, building trust, and managing tension through the unique platform of the circus.

Circus has become an unexpected catalyst for positive change for many young people, helping them to become more social and gaining self-confidence, after suffering abuse in the home.

The circus, with its emphasis on collaboration rather than competition, enhances self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-discipline. Children are exposed to challenges that encourage them to assess risks, push their limits, and rely on others.

The physicality of circus activities provides a non-verbal outlet for children to express emotions related to their trauma.

Activities such as juggling, walking on cables, and trapeze work create a playful yet therapeutic environment. The programme offers both group-based and personalised activities, culminating in a performance where children showcase their newfound skills, fostering excitement and a sense of accomplishment.

The trainers at the camps take a trauma-sensitive care approach when dealing with the youngsters. While the trainers are equipped to handle intense stories that may arise, the focus remains on treating the children as individuals attending a circus, not as cases. The children are given the option to share if they wish, creating a supportive atmosphere.

The programme has been deemed such a success that the Antwerp government will provide support for the organisation to grow sustainably, stating that the initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of circus in providing healing and empowerment for children affected by intra-family violence.
