A new wildlife care centre is set to open in the Brussels Region, announced Environment Minister Alain Maron.

It comes as growing numbers of distressed wildlife in the region overwhelm the only current such centre, run by the Royal League for Bird Protection in Anderlecht.

With hopes to accommodate the influx, the Brussels-Capital Government approved the Environment Minister’s proposal to set up another centre for wild animals in the capital.

The new centre will be launched on the Boulevard du Triomphe in Ixelles, a site covering almost 5000 square meters. Its location near the Sonian Forest offers an ideal space for releasing recovered animals back into the wild, detailed Minister Maron’s office.

The government approved the purchase of this land, and the Brussels Environment Agency will open a tender process for the centre’s construction and future operation within the next few months.

While taking into consideration urban planning and environmental permits, public procurement procedures, and construction time, it’s estimated the new centre will be fully operational by no later than 2028, confirmed Maron in a statement.
